History of The Mansfield Building Society

1869 does not appear to have been a particularly notable year in the history of the world - the Suez Canal opened, the Folies Bergere opened in Paris and debtors' prisons were abolished in Great Britain. Apart from that, not too much seems to have happened.

It was, however, an important year for us because in 1869 The Mansfield Building Society was established. In this age of mergers, consolidations and "big is beautiful" corporate ideology we are proud to say that we continue to serve the community as a completely independent, mutual building society some 140 years later. We have built our reputation on providing individual personal service to all our members.

We are proud of our heritage hewn out of the industrial past in the heart of the Nottinghamshire coalfields and textile industries. These industries may have fallen into serious decline over the last 30 years but the spirit, work ethic and community minded nature of local people has survived through the generations and lives on to this day.

Much progress has been made since those far off days in 1869, with Society assets reaching the £100,000 mark in 1928, £1 million in 1947, £100 million in 1992, £200 million in 2005 and almost £300 million in 2009. We operate from purpose built, landmark premises in Mansfield town centre with a small network of branch offices in our core business area.

We may be relatively small in size but not in outlook or thinking. Our savings products are available throughout the United Kingdom and most of our mortgage products throughout England and Wales - full details can be viewed on this website. Many of our products have featured regularly in best buy tables published locally and nationally.

We hope to do business with you - we are confident that you will not be disappointed.
